Atari announces new pong adventure qomp 2 with gameplay trailer

Atari has just released a new gameplay trailer announcing qomp 2, a follow-up to their 2021 reimagining of pong, qomp. The sequel will be developed by Graphite Lab, and a release date was not confirmed. It will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox.

qomp 2 continues the adventure, where players are the ball and need to escape (again). You can watch today’s new trailer, which shows off new stages and obstacles, on publisher Atari’s YouTube channel:

Whereas the original qomp was relatively small, today’s trailer hints at a lot more content, with its lore and gameplay. The level design that’s been revealed already feels a bit more elaborate than its predecessor, and the story teases deeper “secrets behind an arcade legend”.

Although the first qomp was light on content, its scope was intentionally smaller, which properly served its basic theme about freedom. qomp 2’s official Steam page mentions there will be 30 levels with “new features, mechanics, enemies, traps and hazards” as you progress.

Fortunately, this doesn’t seem to be at the expense of the original’s approach. The Steam page also hints that the story will explore “doubt, fear, and self-acceptance”. That relatable context, alongside the breezy arcade simplicity, was how qomp frequently surprised and thrived.

Today’s trailer does have a very soothing soundtrack, which sets a thoughtful and exploratory mood, though fans can still expect some tough boss fights at the end of each world. The new gameplay does conclude with two pong balls suddenly colliding. The conflict could represent the ball at war with itself, given the themes listed by the devs.

So, qomp 2 appears to be pretty consistent with the previous game, both in quality and tone. That should definitely please fans, and since it’s releasing on all major platforms, it will likely attract plenty of new players.
