Hilary live updates: Tropical storm hits California with rain, flooding

The center of Tropical Storm Hilary has entered Southern California, disrupting life for many of the coastal areas as well as inland regions. The storm forced Death Valley National Park to close and left Las Vegas and small desert communities with the unfamiliar task of handing out sandbags ahead of massive rainfall. It also may have spawned a tornado in eastern San Diego County. Hilary weakened from a hurricane earlier in the day, but it is expected to bring extreme and wide-reaching effects to California, the Desert Southwest and Mexico’s Baja California. Tens of millions of people are under a tropical storm warning, the first of its kind issued for Southern California. Heavy rainfall and “catastrophic flooding” are expected in parts of Arizona and Nevada.
